Forum “Endowments” was conducted online

The Vladimir Potanin Foundation and Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO with the support of the Russian Ministry for Economic Development held the IV International Forum “Endowments 2020. Shared Power”

58 speakers from 11 countries and 54 Russian regions discussed key issues of NGOs’ endowments creation and development. The participants also presented the best practices and new tools to promote an endowment model.

The endowment forum is held annually in Moscow starting from 2017.  Since then it has become the major and the most significant educational and analytical platform promoting the endowment concept among representatives of the non-commercial sector, the government and business in Russia. More than 400 attendees took part in the offline forum in 2019. In 2020, more than 600 people watched live broadcasts and video recordings of the forum sessions.

The forum discussions were held online from 16th to 20thof November. The focus of this year program is the theme of partnership and collaboration, special aspects of joint projects design and opportunities that endowments offer for pooling resources and efforts to achieve joint goals.

The plenary session Fit for the Future: the Endowment Role in the Pandemic and Post-pandemic World” opened the forum. The experts discussed the role of endowments in adaptation to a new reality and opportunities for collaboration and cooperation among the non-commercial sector, the government and business in this crisis period. Oksana Oracheva, the General Director of the Vladimir Potanin Foundation; Gerry Salole, an expert in European and American philanthropy; Andrei Sharonov, the President of Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO and Ilya Chukalin, the General Director of the President’s Grants Foundation shared their ideas. The experts concluded that flexibility, willingness to take risk and readiness to experiment are required to work in the pandemic situation. Active introduction of digital technologies is a new reality which will stay in NGOs’ daily routine. As we do not have time for adaptation, exchange of experience, communication and partnerships play the key role.

The discussion “Use of Digital Footprints to Develop Endowments” focusing on universities’ application of big data to develop effective communication with their target audience also took place on that day.  Eduard V. Galazhinskiy, the Rector of Tomsk State University, Anatoly Nikolaev,  the Rector of Ammosov North-Eastern Federal University in Yakutsk; Alexey Sitnikov, the Vice-President for Communities and Communication Development, Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology;  Maria Sakharova, the Head of the Department for Education and Social Work, Tolyatti State University shared their expert opinions. Mikhail Myagkov, the Head of the Big Data and Social Problems Laboratory, Tomsk University, moderated the discussion.

Involvement of students and alumni in work with universities’ endowments was discussed during the second day of the forum. The experts discussed cases of endowments development and their application in various HEIs. The experts also compared Russian and international practices of interaction with potential and acting donors. The second day of the forum started with the session “From a Perspective Student to a Donor: Developing Loyalty”. Yulia Ledukhovskaya, the Lead Specialist of the MIPT Endowment Fund; Yulia Nakonechnaya, the Head of the Novosibirsk State University Endowment Fund; Victoria Olkhovskaya, the Project Lead, the ex-Head of the project Cultur ALL Reboot,  the MIPT Endowment Fund and Oybek Partov, the President of the Students’ Union, Ural Federal University took part in the discussion.

The discussion “Universities’ Endowments: Creation and Development. And more than that” continued the forum. Zarema Kasabiyeva, the Vice-Rector for Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Affairs and Alumni Relations of the New Economic School; Wouter te Kloeze, the Development Director of St. Antony’s College, Oxford University;  Svetlana Lavrova, the Executive Director of the EUSP Russian Endowment Fund and Suzanne Hilser-Wiles, the President of Grenzebach Glier & Associates shared their expert opinions.

The third day of the forum started with the discussion “Sustainable Economic Models of New Culture”. Representatives of leading cultural institutions shared their experience on successful partnerships of museums and the philanthropic sector, describing concrete cases. Olga Dranichkina, the Executive Director, Tretyakov Gallery Foundation, Alla Platonova, the Director for Development, Perm  Opera and Ballet Theatre, Kelly O’Reilly, the Business Director of the Milton’s Cottage; and  Catherine Elvin, the Policy Manager of the National Lottery Fund participated in the session.

The second part of the business program was focused on the discussion “Funds and Donors: Cooperation Culture”. Svetlana Buryanova, the Executive Director of the “RAMT Support Fund”; Alexander Svistunov, the Director of the Endowment Fund, Garage Museum of Contemporary Art; Evgeny Stodushny, the Director of Krasnoyarsk  Region Philharmonic; and  Luminita Holban, the Acting Development Director, English Heritage, shared their expert position on funding cultural institutions in the current situation.   

The program of the fourth day was focused on endowments’ development in social sphere and developing long-term strategies in the unstable world. Svetlana Borisova, the Deloitte Private Leader; Vladimir Zelenov, Institutional and Corporate Client Director, Alfa Capital; Lydia Limberg,  the Director of Finance, Victoria Children Charity Fund; Irina Ryazanova, the Founder and the Executive Director of the Charitable Foundation “Big Change”; and Natalia Safokhina, the Chief Accountant of the infrastructure platform for NGOs development PHILIN, participated in the session “Social Partnership as the Key to Endowment Development in Social Sphere”.

Developing long-term strategies in the unstable period, fundraising, endowments and large-scale projects were discussed in the practical session “Further Strategies in the VUCA-world or How to Speak in a Simple Way about Complex Things”. Snezhana Frantsuzova, the Marketing Executive of the Civil Unit Community Foundation and the Executive Partner of the Business technologies Center NotaBene; and Veronika Misyutina, the Counsellor of Wealth Transformation Center SKOLKOVO, Moscow School of Managemenet SKOLKOVO, presented their expert opinions. Oleg Sharipkov, the Executive Director of the Civil Unit Community Foundation, shared his optimistic thoughts  on further development of the endowments market. Darya Buyanova, the Director of the Social Innovation Interregional Endowment Fund, Saint Petersburg and the Fundraising Director at the “Dobry Gorod Peterburg” Philanthropic Foundation moderated the discussion.

Experts shared their views on the prospects of “impact investments” in Russia and abroad at the session “Is Impact Investing our Future?”  Tatyana Burmistrova, the Co-founder and Chairman of the Governing Board of the Reach for Change Foundation Supporting Social Initiatives for Children; Yulia Zhigulina, the Executive Director of the Foundation “Our Future”; Ewa Konczal, the Central and Eastern Europe Manager, The European Venture Philanthropy Association; Luciano Balbo, an impact investor; Tatiana Drozdova, a Social Entrepreneur and the Co-founder of the social project Young Old;  and an impact investor Lyubov Sherysheva participated in the discussion.

Representatives of leading management companies shared their projections on profitability of investment portfolios for the next year at the session “Investments for Social Transformation Strategies”. They also suggested approaches to developing endowment investment strategies which fit long-term strategies of non-commercial organizations. The expert position was presented by Roza Voronina, the Head of the Non-Profit Organizations Department, Gazprombank — Asset Management Joint-Stock Company;  Yekaterina Gantseva, the Head of the Directorate of Alternative Investments, Alfa Capital Management Company LLC; Leonid Zamsky, the Head of Corporate Client Department, VTB Capital Asset Management; and Vladimir Tsuprov, the Managing Investments Director, TKB Investment Partners.
