A House in Cross — Section

Widening Our Ideas of 20th Century History, Culture and Art

Where? Yaroslavl Province, Yaroslavl

Who’s involved? The Yaroslavl Art Museum

Project chief: Marina Polyvianaia

When? Since 2013, ongoing

This project, involving a series of interactive encounters with some game elements, is meant to draw the spectator into living contact with daily life in the 1920s and 1930s and with the painting and literature of this avant-garde period. A painting, “A House in Cross-Section,” becomes a gateway, or “portal,” into the 20th century. A multimedia attachment for viewing on a tablet and a website are filled with the recollections of famous poets and painters, evocations of the places where they spent time, their favorite music and pastimes. Thus, a canvas from the museum’s collection, “A House in Cross-Section” (1931), by two Petersburg women artists, Tatiana Glebova and Alicia Poret, who were students of Pavel Filonov, expands visitors’ understanding of culture, and museum attendance has risen.
